Rolex Submariner

Rolex Submariner watch repair

A well informed customer of mine purchased a Rolex Submariner overseas. While he got it for a good price, it had some serious problems internally. The seller said it had been “serviced recently” but this was not the case. My customer had an inkling that something wasn’t right due to it’s performance and the sounds it was making.

Lo and behold, once I opened it up it was not a pretty sight. The watch had incredibly poor amplitude as you can see on the graph below and was not keep good time at all. A screw had come out and damaged a bridge, and the rotor post was worn along with the gib and the jewel. I also replaced a couple of worn wheels.

When servicing a watch it is important to do all the repairs before you clean it. This avoids contaminating it when it’s all clean. The old oils and grease were cleaned off manually using peg wood and rodico, before the watch went into the cleaning machine. This makes it easier to clean the watch when it is in the fluids.

It’s important to note that the whole watch has to come apart so that all the old oil and grease can be removed. Below are some photos of the watch before and after. You can see how the oils dry up and start to chew into the pivots causing damage, wear, and the watch to run poorly. This is why it is important to service your watch every 5 years.

When the watch is reassembled, I timed and regulated it back to superlative chronometer rating. As you can see in last photo below, I got the timing within a couple of seconds a day and the amplitude is up around 300 degrees compared to the 170 degrees initially.
