What’s involved in a watch repair & service?

Mechanical watches are much like cars: they need regular servicing. The watchmaking industry recommends a service every five to ten years, give or take. Depending on the watchmaker or the brand, everyone has their own opinion: some more, some less.

General service breakdown:

  • Preliminary checks of the case and band for any kind of damage and a water resistance check

  • Full disassembly of case and band components, including glass, crown, bezel and seals

  • Removal of dial and hands

  • Complete disassembly of watch movement, with each part individually inspected for any signs of damage, excessive wear or rust

  • Cleaning of watch parts in chemical solutions

  • Cleaning of the case and band components in ultrasonic cleaners

  • Re-inspection of watch parts after cleaning

  • Re-assembly and lubrication of the watch

  • Adjusting timing and regulation

  • Final assembly of dial, hands and casing components

  • Final checks and testing phase

During each step of the process, the watch parts are inspected to ensure the highest quality repair and service. After the watch has been reassembled, thorough testing is undertaken to ensure proper function before being returned to the owner. All services and seal kits come with a two-year warranty for peace of mind.

Why should you look after your watch?

I have written lots of blogs discussing the ins and outs as to why you should service your watch. The following covers how often you should get your watch serviced.

Another one I wrote some years ago goes over why it’s important to get your watch serviced.

Regular service ensures your watch maintains its high quality, allowing it to be passed along for generations. You’ll be less likely to encounter major problems that may cost you in the long term with a hefty repair bill.
