Rolex Milgauss Service

Rolex Milgauss gaining time

This Gents Rolex Milgauss came across my bench because it was gaining time. When asked, the customer told me that it was gaining a couple of minutes a day. He had the Rolex serviced within the last 6 months, and wasn’t too happy.

Upon initial inspection the watch was in fact gaining time and had extremely high amplitude. High amplitude is where the balance wheel in the movement rotates at a greater angular motion than it is meant to. The high amplitude was the primary cause of the time gain. Why? Well, when you have excessively high amplitude it will cause the watch to knock. Knocking happens when the roller jewel hits the backside of the pallet fork, and this can cause an irregular tick which can sound like a horse galloping. Now, extremely high amplitude is not a common thing and can normally be put down to only a couple of problems……. in this case it was the mainspring. Lubrication of the mainspring and barrel is incredibly important. It will have a dramatic impact on how well the watch will run. If oiled incorrectly, it will either cause low amplitude, or excessively high amplitude as it did in this case.

Aside from the service I also gave the case and band a polish, and the watch came up looking like an absolute treat! Have a look at the results below. If you are interested in getting a watch serviced with me, you can expect the same great service, and I also provide a two year warranty.
