Meistersinger Perigraph repair

Meistersinger Automatic watch

Meistersinger is famous for making their minimalist watches that have only one hand. The watches are quite large and have increments of 5 minutes on the dial. While this makes it impossible to know the exact time you can know within a couple of minutes. A Meistersinger watch recently came in for a service as it was running slow and had low amplitude.

Upon initial inspection and dismantling of this SW200 movement, I could see the oils had dried up creating a fine dust and were spreading through the watch. The reverser wheels were not winding up due to excessive pivot wear and dry oils which meant that the mainspring was not being wound. This in turn affects the timing of the watch and the power reserve. If you couple this with bad power transfer then you have some serious problems.

The SW200 movement is the twin of the ETA2824. While they look exactly the same, most of the parts do not interchange. This is where people can get into trouble, thinking they are the same but the differences are so minute that you could be confused for thinking otherwise.

Can you figure out how to tell the time on this watch?

When you get a watch repair done with me I take extra precautions, there is nothing worse than seeing a watch with a damaged dial, hands or movement parts when this could have been easily avoided. Things like:

  • using protective plastic when removing hands and fitting hands greatly reduced the risk of damage

  • having tools in good condition,

  • screw drivers sharpened correctly

  • hand removing tools polish

  • using the correct tools the correct way.

Taking extra care in these small ways mean the difference between a good and a bad repair. It is your right and expectation to get the watch back in the same or better condition than when you handed it over. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or raise any concerns you have if you feel your watch hasn’t been treated with care.
