Adelaide Watchmaker
Watchmaker Adelaide
As a watchmaker based in Adelaide, I repair all types of timepieces, including: mechanical watches, diving watches, aviation watches, military watches and vintage watches. Watchmaking refers to the making and/or repair of watches. I focus on the repair, servicing and restoration of watches and specialise in the repair of mechanical watches. I have undertaken numerous qualifications across Australia, UK and the USA, meaning that I’m a great choice to repair a vast range of watches for you.
Mechanical watches are all powered by a mainspring which is a thin strip of metal, instead of a battery. Mechanical watches are made up of many parts. Because of this they take a lot longer to repair compared to quartz watches. Mechanical watches can be broken up into three categories. These include:
Manual wind watches - as the name suggests these types of watches require you to wind them manually once a day to keep them going. These kinds of watches were popular before the automatic watch was invented. The mainspring was wound by turning the crown forward, which through a series of gears increased the tension on the mainspring.
Automatic watches - these watches self-wind from the kinetic energy of a weight as it spins around due to movements from the wearer. Once the automatic watch was invented it allowed the wearer to not have to wind his watch everyday.
Chronograph watches - this type of watch is able to record elapsed time, on demand and independently from the same time source. These types of watches are popular in the forces, diving and medical professions. The most common type of chronograph movement found today is called the ETA 7750. It is used by numerous brands across the industry. It is know for it’s robust, simple and reliable service.
Unlike battery operated watches, mechanical watches generate more wear and tear due having more moving components, the power generated from the mainspring, and the friction. Because of this mechanical watches need to be serviced regularly so that the oils stay fresh and don’t go off. I recommend getting your mechanical watch serviced every 5 to 7 years.
